About Peter

Peter Hume is a Municipal Councillor for the City of Ottawa. For the last 20 years he has represented the community of Alta Vista at the local and regional levels of government.

Peter is the Chair of the City of Ottawa's Planning Committee and is a member of the Environment Committee as well as the newly formed Finance and Economic Development Committee. Since 2004 he has served on the Hydro Ottawa Holding Inc. Board of Directors. In 2005 Peter was elected to the Board of Directors of the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO). In 2008 he became President of the Association.

Peter is a life-long resident of the Alta Vista ward where he continues to reside with his wife Ann Marie and their daughter Helen. He attended Hawthorne Public School and Canterbury High School before graduating to Carleton University where he earned a degree in Economics. Peter is an active member of his community sponsoring and participating in numerous projects and events.

Peter's Philosophy

"I believe my role as a City Councillor is to effectively be your voice at City Hall. Part of that role includes understanding what issues are important to residents and bringing that information to the Council table.

One of the challenges with development in established neighbourhoods is balancing the benefit to the City with the impact and disruption to the surrounding community. As, your City Councillor I believe that development projects benefit when leading planners and architects shape them. Responding to individual proposals is not the best way to engage the community and build a better city.

"Rather than responding to applications in an individual and adhoc manner, I believe Community Design Plans (CDP) articulate our expectations for how future development will integrate with our community.

"The creation of a Community Design Plan is a comprehensive and inclusive planning process that includes urban design guidelines, traffic analysis, pedestrian and transit requirements, and measures that protect the integrity of a residential community."

Peter's Vision for Ottawa and the Alta Vista Community

"Ottawa is the Capital of Canada and I believe residents and tourist alike should experience what I call the "wow" factor. There are so many parts of Ottawa that I tour around and find myself saying, "wow, I can't believe how great this City is." My vision is to extend this feeling across Ottawa, particularly to the residents of the Alta Vista community, which has always been my home.

"I have always been a strong proponent of urban design and I believe that building infrastructure is about creating great communities, not just buildings. I always consider this underlying vision when making decisions at the Council table.

"We are starting to see some great spaces develop in Ottawa such as the new Congress Centre and Lansdowne Park. As Ottawa continues to intensify, the Alta Vista Community will become a more centralized and accesible area of Ottawa. My vision is to ensure that residents and visitors to our community take pride in our community and our great City."
